The dominant feature of Old Jerusalem is the familiar Dome of the Rock, the shining gold leaf shrine of Islam. It stands on the site of the ancient Solomon's Temple which was destroyed in 70 A.D. The Dome of the Rock is also known as "Abraham's place." A visitor leaves one's shoes and cameras outside with someone to guard them and steps into the serene coolness of the room the main perimeter of which is covered with oriental rugs. Around the inner face of the dome is Arabic script created in mosaic tiles, describing the attributes of the sultan who commissioned the building of the shrine.
