Doing the work of an evangelist is often a task that many Christians do not feel equipped to accomplish. The whole idea of fishing and catching people who are unchurched is biblical but still a little scary. It is easier to fish in the fish bowl and talk to people who are already going to church. A cartoon once portrayed a fisherman standing before a display case filled with the day's catch. Still in his hip waders with his creel on his side, he looked at the clerk and said: "Throw them to me. One thing I don't do is tell a lie." In Florida, many fishermen catch mullet by first chumming bait into the water. In a similar way, our task is to sow and share the word. We can fulfill our ministry by being sensitive to the needs and conditions of people. Doing the work of an evangelist means that we are ready to give a reason for the hope that is within us. It's amazing how the Holy Spirit keeps putting people in front of us when we are prepared.
