Does vengeance indeed belong to...

Does vengeance indeed belong to the Lord or is it our possession? The Bible seems to, at different times, say each of those things. However, I believe the dominant theme indicates God tells us "vengeance is mine" (Deuteronomy 32:35). And Paul confirms with "Never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God; for it is written, 'vengeance is mine, I will repay,' says the Lord" (Romans 12:19).
I had a most unique experience many years ago and I hope you will help me tell this story. Martin Luther King, Sr. was preaching at a church I pastored. He said, with tears in his eyes, "They killed my son" ... and then he leaned out over the pulpit and made sure all present heard what he said next, "but I don't hate nobody." Back in my study after the service I asked "Daddy" King how he could possibly be so free of a vengeful spirit and he said, "Son, God gives me no choice."
There have been many times I wanted my tit to power quickly and devastatingly back at his or her tat. Seldom have I succumbed to that temptation. Somehow, in someway, God stayed my hand and took the sword right out of it.
