On a December day when it was ten degrees, a pregnant woman in her thirties boarded a bus in Milwaukee, wearing a tattered coat and ripped socks, but no shoes. She told the bus driver she had enough money to buy shoes for her eight children, but not for herself.

The incident moved a fourteen-year-old boy to take off his shoes and give them to the woman, "Here, lady, you need these more than I do." Later the boy tried to soften the praise he received by saying, "After all, it's Christmas."
