In December 1999 a horrific wind, clocked at 125 miles per hour, swept across France and felled 270 million trees. That is enough board feet to build over 1,000,000 average American homes. One of Europe's most famous gardens is at Versailles, France. It has stood beautifully trimmed since the seventh century. Neither bitter winters, two world wars, nor a mob that stormed through the castle grounds during the French Revolution did serious damage to the gardens. But, this wind destroyed over 10,000 trees in the famous Versailles garden. It will probably take 100 years to recover the growth.
