In the days following last spring's tragedy at Virginia Tech, students gathered on
university campuses all across the country to pray for the students and families. Students
prayed in open areas -- visible to anyone who passed by. At one university, the campus
minister conducted a prayer service where over 300 students gathered. It was a moving
service where students and professors openly wept. The campus minister reported that
many students stopped by to talk that week. The students were shocked and asked hard
questions, trying to come to terms with what had happened on another college campus.
News from Virginia Tech the week after the tragedy reported on the number of students who appreciated the prayers of so many people across the country. They were uplifted when they learned that so many people had been praying for them.
We can never underestimate the power of prayer as the apostle Paul taught his young friend, Timothy, "Urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone." As another school year has begun, let us pray for students of all ages, teachers, and administrators, both locally and across the nation.
