David had enlisted in the Marines, full aware of the possibility of combat, especially with all of the "hot" spots heating up around the world. But, when the Persian Gulf area was struck with Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, David's unit was one of the first to go. He had experienced a lot of fear and anguish these past few months as the war approached and then began with the fast and furious air strikes. He wasn't so much afraid of death as he was anxious to survive long enough to find out whether his wife, Sharon, had a boy or a girl.
Today, the cease-fire was announced amidst sighs of relief and shouts of celebration. Shortly after that announcement, David received notification that he was the father of a baby girl. So, he sat down and wrote these beginning lines of a letter to his new daughter:
Dear little one: The news of your birth has brought so much joy to my heart. I celebrate your birth even as I celebrate beginnings of peace in this land. I thank God for you. During these past few months as I lay on my sandy bunk, afraid of what tomorrow would bring, thoughts of you calmed me and gave me hope. Now that you are here, I pray that you will never, ever have to experience the torment I have just been through. May the Prince of Peace grant you peace all the days of your life.
