Read, until recently senior minister of the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church, New York City, declared as follows in one of his sermons: "I have recently read several of the best-selling novels of our day and the effect they had on me was to make me want to shout, 'Is this all that human life adds up to? Is there nothing more than squabbling and neuroses and depression and spending money and fornicating and taking drugs?' We know the power of the dark forces that threaten human life.
