David C. Egner wrote an article in Our Daily Bread about evangelist Fred Brown. Brown explained the purpose of the law which we have received from God. He compared the law of God to a dentist's mirror. The dentist uses the mirror to discover cavities in the patient's teeth. The mirror can show the dentist and the patient the places where there is decay. It can't, however, provide a solution to the problem. Furthermore, Brown compared the law of God to a flashlight.
Suppose you are working in your study at night. Suddenly, the lights go out. You use the flashlight to find your way down the basement stairs and to the fuse box. The flashlight helps you to see which fuse is burned out. The flashlight can show you the problem. It can't be the answer to the problem.
Still further, Brown likened the law of God to a plumbline. When a builder wants to check his work, he uses a weighted string to make sure that his work is truly vertical. The plumb line can show whether there is a problem, but it doesn't provide the solution.
