In a dark corner of the Metropolitan Museum in New York is a painting, not well known, from the Baroque era, which always tickles me when I come upon it. Huddled on the earth are the disciples, big, clumsy, they are almost knocking their heads together in a slapstick fashion as they look upward. Then at the top of the painting beyond a center section of clouds, are two feet, as Christ ascends to heaven. The artist has a sense of humor, and an amazing and not so subtle ability to tickle us and help us keep perspective on the meaning of the Ascension.
