Daniel L. Schutte gave to Christendom in 1981 a wonderful new hymn for the Lord's Day, which is particularly suitable for occasions of ordination and confirmation: "Here I Am, Lord." The contemporary hymn is based on the ancient text of Isaiah 6:8-9, and contains the words and spiritual commitment of a prophet's heart. Each stanza of the hymn commences with words spoken/sung by a sovereign God who is at once in touch with and sensitive to the needs of all children of creation. The refrain of the hymn is presented as the voice of one answering the call to respond to service in the life God envisions and sets forth. Truly, here is a hymn fit for a new generation in the Church, and which faithfully articulates a God who is both for us and with us as we seek to be faithful to our calling in Christ. -- Saxon
