In Cyril Harris' novel, Street Of Knives, a man comes upon the Squire who is leaning on the handrail of a bridge and asks him if he is looking for something down in the water. The Squire asks, "Do you see this handrail?" When the man acknowledges that he does, the Squire replies, "Well, that's what I've lost. Something to hold me back when I get too near to the edge ... Men call it God. I'm looking for it." The apostle recognized that too many people live in the dark like that Squire. They are looking for God.
