Credentials are important. When George O'Leary was hired by Notre Dame University to become its next football coach, he had spent eight years successfully leading the program at Georgia Tech. As part of the fanfare surrounding his arrival as new coach for the Irish, O'Leary's resume was widely published. Among the items listed were his academic credentials. That listing included a degree he had not attained, a Master's from NYU, and a letter he had not earned, for football at New Hampshire. The resulting furor generated by questions about his misrepresentation led to his dismissal only five days after being named. The epilogue to the story finds O'Leary coaching again as part of the staff of the Minnesota Vikings. He was hired when a former player of his at Central Islip (NY) in the 1970s, Mike Tice, became the Vikings' head coach. Now he is enjoying coaching again and his Vikings' media guide lists his academic background properly as a bachelor's degree in Physical Education.
