The cowboy had spent days rounding up stray cattle and searching for newborn calves which had become separated from their mothers in the recent spring storm. Hearing weak, plaintive bellows in the distance, he followed the sounds to the swollen waters of the Rio Grande, where he saw a calf standing on a small island of sand in the middle of the river. As the cowboy stood, trying to decide how best to remove the crying calf, he heard another, louder cry from the opposite side of the river.
