The cottonwood tree is a familiar sight in New Mexico, and there is one, in particular, which stands near the Rio Grande River south of Albuquerque. It is one of the largest and oldest of the cottonwoods, and many stories are told of the people and events connected to the tree. It has sheltered Indian pow-wows, supported children who played in its branches, cooled many travelers from the desert sun, and witnessed a few bloody skirmishes.
