The connection between food and faith is experienced worldwide in the devotional life of many worshiping communities. It is not coincidental that some of today's gourmet cookbook authors are also priests and pastors! This key section of Exodus discusses the rituals around the sharing of food which mark the Passover event for the Jews in Egypt.
Life-giving food -- bread, lamb, herbs -- were all utilized to encourage faith and defy political and spiritual death. The kitchens of Israel were turned upside down with the activities. Everyone, including the neighbors, were included in the sharing of the meal. Food was prepared in a special way and eaten in a unique fashion.
The heart of the ritual was the blood of the lamb smeared on the door posts. It is in that powerful symbol that Christians center their sharing of the meal of wine and bread, remembering the Lord of salvation.
