A colleague was asked to speak at a community prayer breakfast. Knowing that the audience would be theologically diverse, he settled on this text. "How can I go wrong telling people about our God of love and urging them to love one another?" he reasoned.
Two days after the presentation he received a three page, single-spaced letter from a man who was incredibly angry over the sermon. It seems this fellow believed the church should emphasize the anger and judgment of God. As he put it, "God has called me to condemn all ministers who say we should 'love one another.' "
One of the important maxims of church administration seldom taught in seminary is that "One cannot reason with an idiot." Trying to have an intelligent discussion with this particular letter writer would, in all probability, be a waste of time. More troubles him than a twisted theological principle lodged crossways in his mind.
Unfortunately, judging from the way multitudes behave, this fellow has many members in his tribe. Most people, however, are not as honest. Instead of saying they don't believe in loving others, they simply fail to do it.
