CNN's Soledad O'Brien claims that faith played an essential role in her life while
growing up. She was one of six children and remembers going to church with her family.
Their reward would be that their father would make breakfast for the whole family. As
she got older, she married and had a family and started working weekends which made it
difficult to attend worship. She wanted faith to be central in her daughters' lives as it had
been in hers.
Like many others, Soledad felt God pulling on her heart after September 11, 2001. "I was searching for a deeper purpose in my life," she explained. When her contract expired with NBC, she was offered an attractive position with CNN co-hosting the weekday, American Morning. This would be a more challenging position requiring longer days, but at least she would have her Sundays free. Soledad can be seen weekday mornings on CNN.
Her family bought a house in the country. Across the street was a church which, she says, "reminded me of my own childhood." The first Sunday they worshiped they were greeted by the pastor during coffee hour. He invited the girls to attend Sunday school.
Soledad says Sunday worship is "important in our lives again and it highlights exactly what's essential in my life, my family, and my faith." Her desire was to lay a strong foundation for her daughters like the one her parents had given her.
