Clem and Irene were brother...

Clem and Irene were brother and sister. They had been close as children, had double dated as teenagers and had socialized together as young adults. But then a war intervened. By the time the war had ended, both had married. Before long children were born. Even though life took Clem and Irene to different parts of the country, the tie between them remained strong. But then words were said that shouldn't have been. Actions were taken in response to the words, and the tie was broken.
Nearly 20 years went by. The words were forgotten and the actions lost their meaning, but the rift between Clem and Irene remained. Every family function was affected. If Irene were going to be there, Clem wouldn't be. Likewise, if Clem were going to be there, Irene wouldn't be. It wasn't until they unexpectedly saw each other at a family reunion that things changed.
Irene hadn't planned on coming and so Clem was going to be there. But Irene changed her mind and because she had heard that Clem wasn't going to be there, she didn't bother to let anyone else know that she was coming. Irene and Clem saw each other at the same time. They stared at each other and the family stared at them. They stepped towards each other and the family collectively held its breath. They hugged. It happened. Forgiveness had begun.
