Clay was angry! His print shop had a hot job that came in on Christmas Eve and was due the day after Christmas. He would have to work most of the holiday. While working on the press, Clay saw a little boy was leaning up against the door behind the building. The boy was crying that his parents were arguing and fighting during this holiday. Clay shared his lunch with the little boy. They talked as Clay worked. The boy got Clay cups of coffee and swept the floors of the pressroom.
When the day was over, the boy was laughing and playing again. On Clay's way home, he wondered where God was for him on this holiday? It suddenly occurred to him, that God was mysteriously present in the little boy! He never saw the boy again. That was a Christmas where God's mysterious presence came in the form of crying little boy.
Clay was like the working-class shepherds of the days of the birth of Jesus.
