Church councilman Bill would always exclaim, "Everybody wants to get to heaven, but nobody wants to die to get there." He was referring to the fact that old First Church needs to redefine its mission. The "older guard" is dying in the church. Others are unable to support the church financially as they were once able to do so. This church has to die to its past traditions and rediscover a new mission. This means the pain of change. Yet, not change for its own sake.
