Christians would rather read the Book of Hebrews than tackle the apocalyptic Book of Revelation. Written by a Greek scholar, Hebrews is constructed to assert an awesome power and glory of Jesus Christ. Theologians call this a high Christology.
Is it important for Christ's followers to know that he was the Messiah whom they long awaited? Yes. Christ was more glorious, more reliable, and closer to God than any previously known prophet.
Some scholars wonder if perhaps the author of Hebrews is dismissing his or her Jewish heritage ("in the past" v. 1). Does God speak not through an Old Testament prophet but "by his Son" (v. 2)? Yes! That is the author's message. These first four verses in Hebrews are the foundation of the beliefs and creeds of Christianity.
No more beautiful assurances exist in the Bible than the hymn in Hebrews 1:3 praising Christ. The declaration is "sustaining all things by his powerful word." He is superior to the angels and more powerful in word and deed than anything else the world has witnessed. It truly transcends all human understanding.
