A Christian said to a suffering person, "God must have a reason." Such speculation ranks
with the blasphemy of insurance companies labeling natural disasters "acts of God."
Whereas people thoughtlessly attribute tragedies as God's punishment, Jesus raises our view. As individuals and as nations, God has the right and the reason to punish us. The prophets and John the Baptist pointed that out. Yet, God is merciful. Jesus was merciful to people who seemed beyond help to the religious folk of his day.
Humans are like the portions of New Orleans below sea level that are always under threat of flood. Yes, God's judgment hangs over all of humanity. But Jesus' entire ministry proclaims God's mercy and summons us to change our thinking and our living.
