As children, my brothers and I each had our own section of ground in our family's vegetable garden. One of the sections was located near the raspberry bushes. The vegetables planted in this section were in danger of being choked out by the roots of the raspberry canes. A second section was located on a slight rise in the center of our family garden. It received the full effect of the afternoon sun and as a result it tended to dry out quickly. When this happened, the plants withered and died.
