The Chesapeake Bay retriever is an extraordinary breed of dog. With its coarse, oily coat it was bred for cold weather and hard waterfowling by the bay men of an earlier era. The breed is known for its keen nose, hearty disposition and relentless energy for the retrieving task. For the chessies that find their way into modern households, these ancient instincts often emerge in a delight for fetching the morning newspaper for their master. Despite their vigor for the task it is readily apparent that though they will run to retrieve the paper, it is beyond their capabilities to read it.
