Charles Spurgeon, the great English Baptist preacher of the 19th century, was fond of telling the story of how this passage of Scripture transformed his own young life. As a teenager he quested after personal faith, but he did not have the assurance he desired.
One snowy winter Sunday he went to worship at a small primitive Methodist chapel. The weather was so terrible that the regular preacher did not make it to the service that day.
