The candidates had granted four interviews while touring three different industrial sites during a busy day of campaigning. Now it was time for the fund-raising dinner with some of the faithful supporters of the party. Aides had meticulously combed the reservation list to organize the seating chart. The major donors were seated at the tables close to the front of the room. Those who had made more modest donations to the campaign were seated toward the rear of the room.
Moments before being seated for the meal, the candidate strode to the rear of the room and threw his arms around a crisply groomed elderly woman. She had already taken one of the seats farthest from the head table. Minutes later, the candidate had convinced her to join him at the head table.
Between the meal and the speeches, the candidate introduced his guest this way: "My friends, tonight I was treated to a very special surprise. Driving all the way from my hometown came a woman who taught me some of the most important lessons of my life. It is with a real sense of joy and privilege that I present to you, Mrs. Wellenreiter, my very first Sunday School teacher."
