There are so many fascinating parallels to be drawn from this passage God often was experienced out of a cloud in the Old Testament and Jesus eventually ascended in one Moses' face shone after he spoke with God, so that it had to be covered. Experiences with God often took place on mountains. The words spoken, "This is my beloved son," are the same as at the baptism of Jesus.
It is so easy for us to become New Testament Christians, not seeing our faith in the context of its roots. This passage, with its introduction of Moses and Isaiah, its use of some images that are evocative of the Old Testament, and its obvious implication that the ministry of Jesus stood in direct relationship to the history of the Old Testament, offers a wonderful opportunity to preach on the need for thorough understanding of the Old Testament as a very valuable tool for interpreting the New Testament.
