The Bristlecone pine is recognized...
Illustration
The Bristlecone pine is recognized as the oldest living tree in the world, with some specimens in the White Mountains of California thought to be 4,000 years old. One of the amazing characteristics of this tree is its ability to remain strong and grow under adverse conditions and in environments which are clearly inhospitable. This species of pine is that which one sees pictured clinging tenaciously to wind-swept ridges. This is the tree one sees in photographs of rocky ledges, where no other life is visible.
