Bread is the sustenance of life. It is the most basic and necessary need of physical man. When the Israelites cried out for food in the wilderness, God provided daily manna, a type of bread. (Exodus 16:31) When the crowds followed Jesus, he took a boy's five loaves of bread and two fish and fed five thousand, with twelve baskets of food remaining. (John 6:1--12) Bread is also used as a symbol of spiritual filfillment. The first communion table was covered with pure gold, and placed in front of the sacred covenant box which held the stone tablets upon which was written the Ten Commandments.
