The biosphere is the relatively thin zone of the earth's environment that supplies those characteristics necessary to support life. It ranges from about ten kilometers into the atmosphere (six miles) to the deepest depths of the ocean floor. Life in the zone depends on energy derived from the sun, circulation of heat, and essential nutrients. The only exceptions are deep-sea thermal vents where the sole provided energy is generated by the earth itself. Within this mantle of habitable space, everything necessary for the provision and maintenance of the wide variety of life on the earth is available. In this sense the biosphere may be said to be complete insofar as providing the necessities of life. (Christ is the complete Lord insofar as providing all that is necessary for salvation.)
