Bill and Marsha tried very hard to be effective parents. Despite their good intentions, however, they were failing. Both had been raised in households where discipline went beyond the reasonable to the edge of cruelty. They heard only criticism in their growing up years. No one ever had a positive thing to say about them or to them. Consequently, both suffered as adults from low self-esteem.
