Beneath the rubble of the apartment building May Ying huddled in a little space. Her leg was trapped by a huge piece of concrete. The earthquake had hit the island so quickly and with so much power that there had been no time for anyone to get out. She could hear the voices of others trapped nearby, but she had no idea how many were still alive and how many had died. Crying, she dozed in and out of consciousness. The pain in her leg seemed to get worse and then go numb for a while before getting worse again.
She remembered the words of the teacher from Sunday school, "Trust in God. When you are weak, God's Spirit will give you the strength that you need." She was too weak to help herself, that was clear. All she could do was wait and cling to whatever hope was hers in this bleak situation. It had been three days since the earthquake. Her lips were cracked and her body was dry. Without water she wouldn't make it much longer. She continued to pray. "Trust God," she thought to herself.
Then it happened. Through the concrete she could hear the sound of pry bars moving concrete. Someone was close. She started to cry out for help, and through the rubble the workers heard the sound. It was still hours before she would be completely freed from the false tomb that imprisoned her, but her faith and God's presence had enabled her to get through to this point. She would make it a few more hours.
