Ben Sirach gives sound advice. Indeed, we should give praise to people in their own generation.
In keeping with that admonition, First Christian Church, Bloomington, Illinois, designates one Sunday each year as "Honored Leader Sunday." During the morning worship service a select few, who have given "above and beyond," are recognized and thanked for their years of service to the congregation. The church decided not to wait until retirement or even the funeral to praise these folks. While people are still serving the church they are recognized as Honored Elder, Deacon, Chorister, Christian Educator or any other designation the congregation believes appropriate.
The names of these leaders are inscribed on a large plaque which hangs in a prominent place in the church. Since the church has been making these recognitions for more than two decades, the list of honored leaders is getting long. For many more years to come these people will be remembered. "Their prosperity will continue forever and their glory will not be blotted out (v. 13 RSV)."
