Because the devil was not depicted in Christian art until an illustrated manuscript known as the Utrecht Psalter shows him as a half-naked man holding a three-pronged pitchfork, an article in the October 1999 Smithsonian contends that the concept of a devil was mainly a medieval phenomenon, extremely popular a millennium ago. The contention is that his origin dates to the Persians under whom the Jews lived for some years.
