To be righteous means to do what is right. That can mean to level the playing field, both for people and the rest of God's creatures.
Thomas Hobson, a citizen of Cambridge, England, during the first half of the seventeenth century, sometimes hired out his horses to strangers. When a customer came, he would take them to the stable and tell them that they would have to take the horse standing nearest to the stable door. In this way, he guaranteed that his customer had an equal chance of hiring a good or bad horse, and that each horse had an equal chance of receiving good or bad treatment.
