Barnabas emerges as an exceptional person. He was a Levite. Like Paul he came out of the scribal ranks. He was given the name "Son of Encouragement" by his Christian friends. He gave material support to the mission. (Acts 4:36) He defended Paul before the other apostles. (Acts 9:27) He took a chance on Paul by bringing him to Antioch as a co-worker. The team of Barnabas and Paul became that of Paul and Barnabas. (No jealousy!) It was Barnabas who put his arm around Mark and went off with him after a tiff between Mark and Paul. There is grist enough here for the sermon mill.
