A balance of love and discipline is a tough ministry for any parent to do for their children. Sometimes when the parent disciplines the child, the child in selfish fury shouts, "You don't love me anymore. I don't love you anymore."
At other times, the loving act of the parent is misunderstood by the child as permitting more and more freedom to do whatever the child wishes. Too much freedom and the child feels ignored and again the child cries out, "You don't love me anymore."
God loved and disciplined the Israelites through the desert for 40 years. In their hunger he gave them manna. Their clothes did not wear out or their feet swell -- but still, they were in the desert for 40 years! Why? In order to believe in God, God's promises, keep his commandments, be humble and know that people live on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
We are blessed with a loving and dependable Heavenly Father. We can say, "We realize you love us, always!" He will discipline and care for us so that we always know he loves us and that we are free to love him.
