With a background in economics, Patrick Holland had been convinced to run for Congress. Crowds of supporters had met him at each public appearance waving banners with encouraging slogans. Many banners simply said, "We love you, Patrick."

After a few short years, he began to focus his attention on the problem of the deficit. He became increasingly convinced that government needed to cut spending and increase taxes to balance the budget. Otherwise, the growing deficit was going to devour the country in the very near future. It was an unpopular notion, but his background in economics and his personal charisma enabled him to create and pass some legislation which put the country on the path toward fiscal sanity. He was praised in the press for his courageous leadership in battling the deficit.

Sure, there were groups which felt his spending cuts were too severe. In fact, many of those who originally supported him, abandoned him when he began his spending cut proposals. But today, as he retires from Congress after three successful terms, people again greet him with banners proclaiming their love for Patrick Holland.
