Back in Texas in 1917...

Back in Texas in 1917 the state's governor, James Ferguson, refused to sign a bill that would have provided schools with funding so that they could teach foreign languages. In his veto message the governor said, "If English was good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for the schoolchildren of Texas." But as you probably are aware, Jesus spoke Aramaic, not English. Yet our tendency is to think of God and Jesus as white, male Americans. In many different ways, we try to make God and Jesus just like us, often to justify our showing a bias against those who are different.
