What if George Washington, while trying to throw a silver dollar across the Rappahannock River, didn't quite make it and it splashed? What if his hatchet was so dull he could not cut down the cherry tree? Would this make Washington any less the Father of his country? I think not. His faith and endurance in time of national trouble, not the apocryphal deeds of his youth, make him authentic for us.
And what if Jesus did not walk on water, or quiet the storm on Galilee? Would this make him any less the Lord of life? Jesus is Lord, not because he broke the laws of nature, but because he rose above the limitations of human nature and was obedient to God, even unto death. His faith and endurance make our humanity authentic once more and save us from despair.
