On August 6, 1945, Hiroshima, Japan, was the target for the first use of atomic weapons in history. Before the attack Allied bombers had spared the city. Dating back to the fifteenth century, it was regarded as one of Japan's most beautiful cities. At approximately 8 a.m. the bomb was dropped. The attack by the Enola Gay changed everything. In an instant the city and its beauty were eradicated. A wasteland remained, marked simply by the shattered remains of the dome at the city center. Who among the Japanese people gazing out upon the desolation could imagine anything "new"?
