Around Christmas time, children are often struck with the urge to do good; to number among the nice rather than the naughty. We may find them suddenly helping their siblings, doing their chores without prompting, and smiling a lot. A wise parent encourages such behavior, hoping that this behavior will become a habit in his children's lives. As Goethe said, "Kindness is the
golden chain by which society is bound together."
The wisest parents love their children and tell them so, even when the habit slips and their children misbehave. In doing so they develop the habit of loving. Is that not what Christ did for us even when we try to smell holy rather than be holy?
