Archie Bunker listened to the riddle posed by his son-in-law, Mike. "A young man in a hospital emergency ward was seriously injured," said Mike. "The surgeon was called for an immediate operation. The young man was the son of the surgeon, but the surgeon was not his father." Mike paused and waited for Archie to respond. Archie suggested that the boy had been adopted or that the surgeon was his step-father. These answers were wrong. Archie learned that the surgeon was the boy's mother! Archie could not see this answer immediately. His male chauvinist presuppositions put limits on his thinking.
