Archaeologists discovered some seeds in a vase sealed in an Egyptian Pharaoh's tomb. When the tomb was excavated, the vase was taken to the British Museum. The seeds, which were dried and wrinkled and hard as stone, were carefully planted under glass. After thirty days, they had spouted and were growing very nicely - even though they were over three thousand years old!
Nature provides many examples of new life springing out of death. A seed is "dead" until acted upon by water and nutrients in the soil. Without them the seed will never come to new life.
Paul says that death is the last enemy to be defeated. Death is the last enemy we face. We cannot avoid death, just as Jesus did not avoid it. But we can face death with the assurance that Jesus also had to face death on Good Friday before the Resurrection on Easter Sunday. We can face death knowing that it is the gateway to new life. God promises to give us new life, just as he can give new life to a seed, or as he gave new life to his Son on Easter morning.
