The apron is a sign of service, worn not only by women in the kitchen but by men and women in various fields of work and duty. The blacksmith, with his heavy leather apron used to be a common sight. The modern butcher, baker and candle-maker all continue to wear their aprons.
Samuel was a servant of the Lord, and his apron symbolized that office. Those who serve the church and minister at the Lord's table are "apron people," for many matters in religion, as in other jobs, require perspiration as well as inspiration.
