April Fleming was a 16-year-old girl who was dying from a rare blood disease that was destroying her liver. So a nurse at the hospital contacted the Seattle branch of the Make A Wish Foundation, which is a nonprofit group that tries to grant special requests to young people who are dying. But when they asked April what her wish was, the Make A Wish people were caught off-guard. What she asked for, no one had ever requested before. Usually children ask the Make A Wish people to send them to Disney World or to arrange for them to meet some famous person. But April Fleming was not interested in anything like that. Her wish was that the youngsters in a certain homeless shelter would receive Christmas presents during the holiday season. So immediately the Make A Wish workers went out, bought presents, and had a Santa Claus deliver them to the homeless children. April, who had once been in such a shelter, was able to see her wish come true on videotape, as she saw the young people's faces light up with joy as they opened the presents. Even as she suffered, April was able to sympathize with others in their suffering. -- Bowen
