On April 18, 1942, 80 airmen in 16 twin-engine B-25 bombers dropped bombs on five Japanese cities. Under the command of then Lt. Col. James H. "Jimmy" Doolittle, the bombers took off from the aircraft carrier, the USS Hornet, some 650 miles off Tokyo. One of the most daring military actions ever carried out (it was the first time planes of that size had taken off from a carrier in combat), it proved to be a turning point in World War II.
