Our family rented an ocean cottage one week each summer so that all the far-flung families could meet once a year. Once we were evacuated with a hurricane warning and went inland to a county court house. Evacuees were strewn in every corridor for an all-night vigil. Our
three-year-old niece woke up around three o'clock in the morning from her beach raft air cushion and announced: "This is the nicest motel I've ever been in." Her wideeyed excitement melted the tension and dissolved the complaining. She loved being surrounded by grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. The gospel comes in unique ways, often with trade-in opportunities: For example, I may give up mourning, grief, ashes, and heaviness, and instead take up beauty, joy, celebration, and liberty!
