Anyone watching more than one...
Illustration
Anyone watching more than one child opening Christmas gifts knows the strict attention paid to who received what! Any slight disparity can result in fights and tears from someone who wants better or more or different.
The life of God's people everywhere manifests itself in what Paul has called the fruits of the spirit. Among these are love, joy, peace and patience -- responses all Christians make as a result of living in Christ. But in his letter to the Corinthians he addresses an issue which can sometimes be a stumbling block, the gifts of the Spirit.
Faith communities are given a vanety of gifts. Some are used and some are not. Some people come with no gift to give except their presence. Others are capable of numerous acts of service and spirituality. The community may need to help some find their gifts. Some congregations resemble children quarreling over the gifts!
Paul's point is not the differences but the unity of the gifts' source. The
Spirit makes no mistakes in sharing the gifts. Any division over their distribution is a sin against the Spirit's communal wisdom.
